The Faculty Research Assistant/Plant Pathology Laboratory Manager manages the plant pathology laboratory, provides laboratory support, and performs diagnostic services for the Extension and Research components of the plant pathology program at the Oregon State University Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Hermiston, Oregon.
The Faculty Research Assistant/Plant Pathology Laboratory Manager is responsible for the general operation of the laboratory with input by the principle investigator as needed. The incumbent will be responsible for carrying out plant disease diagnostic services provided by the lab. This includes gathering information on disease diagnostic samples from clients, examining and testing samples, and reporting diagnostic results back to clients.
The Faculty Research Assistant/Plant Pathology Laboratory Manager also will be responsible for the setup, care, data collection, and maintenance of greenhouse and field experiments as able. The incumbent will be required to frequently make decisions about experimental or laboratory procedures and will participate in decision-making concerned with experimental design, sampling, laboratory techniques, and data analysis under the supervision of the principal investigator.
The Faculty Research Assistant/Plant Pathology Laboratory Manager will be responsible for data analysis of research results by entering data in a spreadsheet, running appropriate statistics, drawing conclusions, and summarizing the significance of results. Incumbent will write completed work reports to funding agencies as well as peer-reviewed journals. This person will also be responsible for assistance with grant writing. Incumbent will prepare and give oral presentations of results at grower and professional meetings as requested by the principle investigator.
Job Requirements
M.S. in microbiology, plant pathology, or related discipline with demonstrated skill in molecular techniques, particularly ELISA and PCR, is required. Experience with general laboratory equipment, techniques associated with microbiology and good laboratory techniques are required. Candidates must have excellent English communication skills, meet and interact well with the public and be able to work independently as well as in team efforts. Strong organizational and time management skills are required. This position must possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license as some travel may be required.
Experience in isolating/identifying fungal, bacterial, and viral plant pathogens is preferred.
