Bell Museum of Natural History College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) University of Minnesota - Saint Paul, Minnesota Position: Mycologist and Curator of Fungi, Bell Museum/Plant Pathology Classification: Assistant Professor, 9 month appointment Reporting To: Director, Bell Museum and Head, Plant Pathology Position Number: 182025 Position Overview: This position is responsible for developing and maintaining an active, collections-based, extramurally funded research program in mycology. Teaching duties required of this position include undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as mentoring students from the University's diverse undergraduate and graduate student populations. In addition, this position is responsible for curating the Bell Museum’s mycology collection. Outreach is an important aspect of this position, specifically through participation in public programs offered by the Bell Museum of Natural History. Major Areas of Accountability: Mycology systematics research and curation – 50% (which includes 15% curatorial activity) The Curator of Fungi is responsible for developing and maintaining an active, extramurally funded, collections-based research program that emphasizes a conceptual and interdisciplinary approach to the systematics and evolution of fungi. The Curator of Fungi is also responsible for building and maintaining the fungal collections in line with modern museum practices. Teaching and educational outreach– 50% The incumbent will teach 6 credits annually. Possibilities include undergraduate courses on fungal diversity, systematics and evolution of fungi, macrofungi, an undergraduate honors seminar, as well as a graduate course in the incumbent's area of specialty. S/he will be a member of the graduate faculty and will advise undergraduate and graduate students, including those from diverse cultural backgrounds. The incumbent will help maintain accuracy of scientific content in the public outreach programs of the Bell Museum and will participate in public outreach initiatives (e.g., teacher workshops, exhibits, or education programs). Salary/Benefits: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Two months of summer salary will be provided for the first two years; subsequently summer salary may be supplemented by research and/or educational grants up to 2.5 months. Organization Description
The Department of Plant Pathology (plpa.cfans.umn.edu) was formed in 1907 and conducts research, education and extension focused on plant diseases and the biology of plant-microbe interactions to ensure sustainability of agricultural, forest and natural ecosystems for the benefit of society. The James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History (bellmuseum.umn.edu) was established in 1872 to collect, preserve, skillfully prepare, display, and interpret our state's diverse animal and plant life for scholarly research and teaching and for public appreciation, enrichment, and enjoyment. The Bell Museum houses nearly four million specimens. The mycological collections associated with this position include the Fungi and Lichen collections. Fungi – The fungal collection, including fungal cultures, numbers over 100,000 specimens (including 322 type specimens) with important collection of rusts of North and South America and Minnesota, fleshy fungi, and slime molds. There is also an extensive collection of plant pathogenic fungi and rusts, as well as the barberry-rust repository collection of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Lichens – This collection is one of the most comprehensive in the nation, numbering over 150,000 specimens (including 851 type specimens), with important collections from U.S. national parks and national forests. There is also an excellent representation from the Sonoran Desert region, Minnesota, and New England, and a good representation of the European lichen flora.
