The Department of Plant Science at South Dakota State University invites applications for the position of Department Head. The University seeks a strong and effective leader with a clear and strategic vision for the department. The Department of Plant Science is a unit of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences; the Department Head reports to the Dean of this college. This is a 12-month, administrative appointment that carries an academic rank of Professor in the Department of Plant Science. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Department Head must lead the department to develop and maintain strong, relevant research, teaching, and extension programs; foster strong working relationships between the department and its alumni, university stakeholders (including commodity groups and other such constituencies), employers, and news media; develop and manage budgets; manage personnel; represent the department in communications with the college and the university.
Job Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. in Agronomy, Biotechnology, Entomology, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, or a closely related field and be eligible for the rank of Professor at South Dakota State University; competence in research, teaching, or professional outreach in one of the above areas, possess effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, commit to the land-grant philosophy and system, demonstrate the potential to effectively manage budgets and personnel, and advocate the department’s programs and initiatives to various statewide constituencies. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The Department of Plant Science is particularly interested in applicants who are recognized nationally in their field, who can secure funding to support and expand departmental programs, and have experience managing research units and field research stations.

SDSU is the state's largest and most comprehensive institution of higher learning. It is designated Carnegie Research University-High Intensity; it is the state’s land-grant institution; and it enrolls approximately 12,500 students. The Department of Plant Science includes 48 full-time faculty and 73 other permanent staff. The Department offers instruction leading to the B.S. degree with a major in Agronomy, Horticulture, and Landscape Architecture. Graduate degrees offered are M.S. and Ph.D. in Plant Science and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences. The Department manages several on and off campus teaching and research facilities. SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, an economically vibrant college town of 22,000 residents, and home to outstanding K-12 schools, major-medical facilities, parks, and cultural and outdoor amenities. Brookings is located on the east-central border of South Dakota, along Interstate 29 and 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city of approximately 150,000 residents.
