Plant Bacteriology
The study of plant bacteriology has led to countless novel findings and advances benefitting medicine and biotechnology as well as horticulture and agriculture. The author, renowned educator and bacteriologist Clarence Kado, has organized the book to help the reader understand the emergence of this science. He includes a brief historical account of microbiology that led to the field of plant bacteriology and weaves in discussions of how bacterial pathogens evolved, and how these pathogens are currently classified. This sets a firm base of understanding for the core chapters that follow. The book clearly illustrates the symptoms caused by bacteria in a way that facilitates comprehension of the many different types of plant diseases that they cause. Plant Diseases Caused by Bacteria: An Image Database and Educational Resource CD is the most comprehensive assembly of bacterial disease photographs presenting different stages of disease development. The image database contains 1,006 high quality digital photographs of plants affected with bacterial diseases. The images may be browsed or searched by host common or scientific name, disease name, pathogen, pathogen synonym, general symptom, or keyword. The CD includes detailed pictures with a range of symptom types caused by bacterial diseases. For example, blights, rots, scabs, galls, leaf and stem spots are all covered.In addition, this CD contains illustrated and detailed narratives on 34 major bacterial diseases and includes important information on various factors of the diseases: mode of transmission, host range, mechanisms of infection, survival, and management. Among the selection of models are some of the world’s most serious diseases. This resource will be valuable in the classroom for teaching identification and diagnosis of disease symptoms caused by bacteria or as a general education tool for master gardener and extension programs. Images can be exported into unique collections for specific uses, which allows for use in custom PowerPoint™ presentations and teaching handouts. A preface, glossary, and references are included.

"I am always looking for ways to improve the delivery of the material in my Phytobacteriology course in the Department of Plant Pathology at Washington State University. I was very excited for the opportunity to add Plant Bacteriology by Dr. Clarence Kado to the reading list. The text book is written in a straightforward manner which is easy to read and understand, even for the novice phytobacteriologist. The material presented was up to date and timely. The figures, tables and pictures very effectively helped to further explain or illustrate ideas presented in the text. The textbook provided excellent photos of bacterially infected plants, which were diverse in nature and covered a wide range of plants impacted by various bacterial pathogens. I used these as examples throughout the course. The references were complete and enabled an easy way to chose current literature for a more detailed discussion.
