From the Introduction:
These pages, although limited to maladies of parasitic nature, constitute the first treatise on plant pathology, in the sense in which today we would speak of such publications. The clearness and the profundity with which questions of basic importance were imposed and confronted, the wisdom and the assurance with which the most difficult problems were solved, problems that tried the greatest students of the time and invited the activities of a large company of later scientists, cannot but astonish the modern reader as he recalls that this work was written in an epoch in which generally it was true that Phytopathology was obscured in a cloud of hypotheses or indeed was dominated by superstitions that had prevailed from very early times.
